4 Types of Anime Demographics

If you have been reading enough manga or watching as much anime as you claim, you will realize by now that works are often marketed by distinct demographic genres. Here are the terms to help you get your facts straight.

#1 Shounen Anime
Shounen – the direct translation meaning “youth” – is a genre targeted at the young male population. Although it can appeal to a large age group, the primary market for these works are those around the age of fourteen to eighteen. Most tend to deal with a serious subject matter, wandering into the field of social critiques and philosophical reflections. #4 Josei Anime
The least well known of the four genres is shojo’s older sister — the Josei category. Like Seinen, Josei anime are aimed at women in their late teens to adulthood. With subject matters similar to shojo’s exploration of relationship and human emotion, Josei works may have a touch of erotic content. Their treatment of romance also tends to be more realistic, unlike the mainly idealized image of romance in shojo. Famously popular josei series include Loveless, Paradise Kiss and Sakurazawa.
